About Dr. Shanis

Shanis Dana.editsquare2Dana Shanis M.D. is a Board Certified Gynecologist and active researcher at the National Institutes of Health. She joins us from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she honed her procedural skills, and was active in medical student and resident education.

Dr. Shanis received her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine and completed her Ob/Gyn residency at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. She attended fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, where she studied the gynecologic care of cancer survivors and other medically-complicated women. Since fellowship, Dr. Shanis has remained involved in her research, publishing articles and presenting at meetings and conferences across the country. In 2011, she was honored with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Cervical Cancer Prevention Award for her work with cancer survivors.

Dr. Shanis provides individualized care to women through all stages of life and strives to educate and empower each patient to be active in her healthcare decisions. Dana Shanis begins to see patients in the latter part of January. 

Patients may see Dr. Shanis for the following services:

•  Routine Gynecologic Care 
•  Adolescent Care (ages 16 and older)
•  Contraception– Including: Nexplanon and IUD placement and removal
•  Preconception Counseling
•  Minimally Invasive Office Procedures
•  Evaluation and Treatment of:

o   Endometriosis
o   Fibroids 
o   Heavy or Irregular Bleeding 
o   Infertility 
o   Menopausal Symptoms
o   Pelvic Pain
o   PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) 
o   Sexually Transmitted Infections 
o   Sexual Dysfunction

o   Abnormal Pap Smear follow up
o   Bartholin’s Gland Cyst or Abscess Treatment

If procedures are needed, you no longer have to leave the office or go to an operating room.  Some of those offered in-office include: 

•  Real-Time Ultrasound to diagnose pain, bleeding or infertility 
•  Biopsy (uterine, cervical, vaginal, or vulvar)
•  Colposcopy for Cervical Cancer prevention 
•  LEEP, Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure for Cervical Cancer diagnosis and treatment 
•  Saline Infusion Sonohystogram for polyps and fibroids
•  Hysteroscopy for assessment of abnormal bleeding, polyps or fibroids
•  Novasure for Treatment of Heavy Bleeding
•  Pelvic floor injections for painful intercourse, chronic pelvic or lower back pain
